The SSAFA Garden supported by CCLA, RHS Chelsea 2022

Published: 11th January 2022

This garden 'SSAFA Garden supported by CCLA' is all about SSAFA’s Norton House, which offers offers free, safe and supportive accommodation to families whose loved ones are receiving treatment for injuries at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC), Stanford Hall near Loughborough.  The house also provides a haven for those being treated, to allow them a break from the medical environment, as well as having peace of mind knowing their families are in a safe and supportive environment nearby.

The last few years have highlighted the importance of the garden at Norton House, and after the event the SSAFA garden will be moved to Norton House.  The modular building of this RHS Chelsea show garden will enable an efficient transfer from the show into a pre-designed space at SSAFA’s Norton House, thus completing another part of the design and landscaping of the garden.

To have a specific garden area within the larger garden, which will offer a peaceful space for the relaxation and enjoyment of the friends, families, patients and staff of Norton House, is extremely important and provides a secure transitional space between the house and the DMRC. The value of a family being together and having time is known to have healing properties, enabling the person to work hard on their rehabilitation knowing their family are safe, secure and supported.

The backdrop of the Royal Hospital Chelsea gives the perfect setting for this garden, providing a military connection to the ‘SSAFA Garden supported by CCLA’.
