‘A Summer Retreat’ was inspired by a traditional British garden, creating a harmonious marriage of style and nature combining orderly geometric shapes with sprawling abundant planting, this garden provided a retreat to sit in peace and reflects the values of simplicity, style and craftsmanship.

The traditional British summerhouse is constructed in sustainable timbers using an ancient agricultural technique: mounting the structure on staddle stones. The sculpture is designed and made by a British sculptor and the floating benches and wooden obelisks are also designed and made by a British company: all adding to the ethos of a locally sourced, British crafted garden.

The naturalistic planting, with freedom of growth in the borders, creates an informal tapestry- style, using soft, mellow tones contrasting with hot colours, to demonstrate the abundance of nature. The three Betula utilis trees and the border of Jacquemontii Carpinus betula hedging provide structural planting that contrasts with the exuberant and colourful planting of the informal borders. Climbing plants on the obelisks add height and additional structure within the borders.

Our client CCLA, are charity fund managers working with the public sector. They requested a very ‘British garden’ within a secluded setting, providing inspirational and ‘take home’ ideas.  They believe that ‘good investment management is like a well-tended garden, requiring constant attention, planting and pruning.’
